6 Eye-Opening Insights on PANS PANDAS Flares When Sick

by | Mar 4, 2026 | PANS/PANDAS | 0 comments

If you’re living with PANS or PANDAS, you’ve probably noticed a pattern that makes your stomach drop every time. You may already recognize the pattern of PANS PANDAS flares when sick. Your child might be doing okay, maybe even manageable, and then they catch a cold, a stomach bug, or come home carrying whatever is going around at school.

Almost overnight, everything changes. This is how PANS PANDAS flares when sick often begin; suddenly and intensely.

Their anxiety spikes. Rage shows up out of nowhere. OCD flares. Sleep falls apart. It feels like something hijacks your child and you can’t reach them.

And you wonder how something as small as a sore throat or runny nose can trigger such a massive emotional and behavioral collapse.

It feels terrifying and deeply unfair.

But I want you to know this pattern is not random. In fact, it’s one of the clearest signature symptoms of PANS and PANDAS. Many families recognize this pattern as PANS PANDAS flares when sick.

Why PANS PANDAS Flares When Sick Feel So Intense

PANS and PANDAS are not mental health conditions in the usual sense. The immune system directly affects the brain in these conditions. That means your child’s immune system is directly affecting their brain.

When your child gets sick, their immune system releases inflammatory chemicals to fight the infection. Those chemicals don’t simply stay in the body.

The Cleveland Clinic explains how inflammation during illness can affect multiple body systems, including the brain.

The result is what you see: sudden anxiety, fear, rage, compulsions, and emotional instability.

Your child isn’t choosing these behaviors. Their immune system releases inflammatory chemicals that irritate and inflame the brain. I know it can seem like they’re being difficult or even out of control, and in a sense they are, but it’s not something they can help.

This is why a simple virus can look like a psychiatric emergency in a PANS and PANDAS child.

I hear this a lot in my practice. In fact, it’s often after a virus that the first signs of PANS and PANDAS start to emerge.

Why This Feels So Extreme and So Fast

One of the hardest parts for parents to come to terms with is how quickly everything changes. It can feel like your child disappears overnight. And in a sense, that is what happens. It’s maddening, scary, and difficult for the whole family.

If I could, I would give you a hug and let you know that it’s okay. What you’re feeling is normal. Stick with me and I’ll help you through it.

When inflammation affects those areas, your child’s nervous system shifts into survival mode. Everything feels dangerous. Small frustrations feel unbearable. Their thoughts loop and refuse to let go. Fear gets out of control. I see this a lot.

This is not defiance. The brain simply cannot regulate itself while it’s under immune attack, so your job is to help your child all while trying to maintain your sense of calm and keep your household under control. If you have other kids, you know this is difficult. Don’t panic. Keep reading.

Why PANS PANDAS Flares Return With Every Illness

You’ve worked so hard to stabilize your child. You might finally see some light or a glimmer of hope, and then another sickness hits and you’re right back in the middle of the storm. Discouraging, I know.

That happens because the immune system doesn’t remember how hard your child fought last time. Every new infection creates a new wave of inflammation. That is exactly why PANS PANDAS flares when sick can feel so defeating.

This repeating cycle is what parents experience as PANS PANDAS flares when sick. And every new wave re-triggers the same neural pathways. The pattern cycles and cycles, leaving you and your child in a desperate state of hopelessness.

One of the biggest things I hear is the emotional toll PANS and PANDAS takes on the parents. You’re not alone. I’m here to support you.

The immune-brain connection needs calming, yet each illness keeps reopening the wound.

That’s why flares feel like setbacks and can be very discouraging. I’m here to tell you that this cycle can be broken.

What Happens During PANS PANDAS Flares When Sick

When your child is in the middle of a flare, it may feel like it erases everything you’ve worked for.

You might feel helpless, watching fear, anger, or compulsions take over a child who was just starting to feel okay.

The most important thing to remember is this: your child isn’t backsliding. Their immune system inflames their brain, and their nervous system shifts into survival mode.

This isn’t something you won’t be able to get them out of.

That means what helps most isn’t discipline or reasoning. It’s calming the immune-brain reaction. Try to keep your cool. I know it’s so hard and it takes a ton of patience, but hang in there.

What Helps When PANS PANDAS Flares Start

When you see symptoms rising during illness, think in terms of support, not control.

Inflammatory and stress signals flood your child’s brain.

The goal is to help their nervous system feel safe enough to come back to grounded.

Each flare of PANS PANDAS flares when sick provides a learning opportunity for the future.

Simple things that make a real difference:

  • Keep the environment as quiet and predictable as possible
  • Reduce demands and expectations
  • Let your child rest as much as they need
  • Offer warmth, comfort, and physical reassurance

These are simple yet helpful things that can keep your child grounded and stable. Remember right now, they need calm, cool, and collected.

How to Reduce PANS PANDAS Flares During Illness

Supporting their immune system before sickness hits is super important. One of my favorite remedies for helping prevent illness is HP-CVIN, which is formulated to support wellness. We use it in our house once a week and more if we’ve been actively exposed.

If sickness should happen to hit, despite your greatest efforts, then you can reach for the Get Well Soon Kit, which has supportive remedies for recovery while supporting the body gently. Why not use it for your whole family?

Remember that you don’t have to fix everything in the middle of a flare. You just have to help your child feel safe.

Speak softly. Keep things simple. Stay physically close if they need it. Remind them that you love them and that they are safe.

Your calm anchors them while their brain feels overwhelmed. That alone is beyond helpful. You’ve got this.

Why Calming the Nervous System Matters So Much

Inflammation makes the brain interpret everything as a threat. That’s why your child may seem scared, angry, or obsessive about things that never bothered them before.

When you lower stress and sensory input, you’re helping the vagus nerve, which is the main calming nerve, to send signals that it’s safe to calm down.

This is where gentle nervous system support can be powerful. I love the Calm Patches to help send the signals to the nervous system to calm down. Another option to use for your child is the Calming Blend. I find that just having something to reach for is so helpful. It makes you feel empowered and less helpless. The best part is that they are safe and gentle and help the nervous system stop over-firing so the brain can calm down and feel safe again.

Here’s a little hint: I highly recommend grabbing the Keep Calm Kit as well. It can be very useful for you as the caregiver in a moment of high stress and doubles as support for your child.

Why PANS PANDAS Flares Keep Happening

If every illness triggers a huge flare, it usually means the immune system is still highly reactive. The brain hasn’t been given a chance to truly heal.

This is where a Chronic Bioresonance Consult can be incredibly helpful. It looks for hidden immune triggers, infections, toxins, or inflammatory patterns, even latent viruses, that keep re-activating your child’s nervous system.

When you identify and address those triggers, flares often become less intense and less frequent. I have seen it over and over in my practice. So many children benefit from something gentle yet effective.

Remember, I struggled for years with my own health issues. I tried everything I could think of, and nothing helped long-term until I found the root cause. That’s what I’m looking for with your child too.

This Can Get Better

Flares are terrifying, but they are also information. PANS PANDAS flares when sick are a reminder that the immune system is still highly reactive. They tell you that this is an immune-driven brain condition and not a character problem and most certainly, it’s not a parenting failure.

With the right nervous system support, immune-calming strategies, and deeper investigation when needed, many children with PANS and PANDAS regain stability again.

You don’t have to walk this alone. I’m beyond happy to help you get your child back.

How to Support Yourself as a Parent

Watching your child suffer in this way is exhausting and heartbreaking. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, scared, and unsure of what to do next.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Remember that this is not your child’s fault, and it’s not yours either. You are navigating a medical condition that affects behavior, emotions, and the nervous system.

Every time you stay calm, speak gently, and offer safety during a flare, you are helping your child’s brain find its way back.

I know how hard this is. I’ve sat with hundreds of parents who are in this exact place. You’re doing better than you think.

Take heart. Your steadiness matters more than you realize.
